Athabasca University (AU) is the first Canadian university to be awarded accreditation by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). The Commission is one of six regional organizations in the U.S. that accredits universities. MSCHE has closely examined the way AU does business and found that AU meets its rigorous international quality standards for higher education institutions. The peer review was conducted according to a set of criteria established by MSCHE to maintain and strengthen the quality and integrity of higher education. The accreditation means that students, prospective students and stakeholders in North America and around the globe can have further confidence in the calibre of Athabasca University's courses and programs; they now know that AU academic offerings, student support services and institution as a whole meets and in some cases exceeds internationally established standards in addition to internal and provincial quality assurance practices. Athabasca University achieved accreditation in June 2005.
